Monday 13th February, the Planning Inspectorate granted, on appeal, permission to Angus Energy for one year of exploration and well testing, overturning Mid Sussex County Council's 2021 decision.
The permission for the Balcombe site at the Lower Stumble Exploration site, off London Road, must start within three years and last no longer than a year. The ruling does not include full production, but makes allowances for future bid applications.
The permission is not for fracking, it's a straight forward oil well. Much is made of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, protecting the immediate environment and water sources. The appeal takes into account various other factors like energy security and our Net Zero targets.

Many reports, including the 2021 International Energy Agency's Net Zero By 2050 have made it clear that opening new oil and gas site are simply not compatible with keeping the planet in a survivable state. There is already enough carbon in existing sources to blow the world's carbon budget.
But as Angus Energy themselves stated here; "the project should generate significant cash flow for the company." So buy some shares in the company tonight, before rushing off to the supermarket to stock up on peppers and cucumbers as storms in Spain and Africa cause shortages and we get a taste of the years ahead.
